The Aspirant – Nick Adams

Bache Loftt wants nothing more than to follow in his father’s footsteps and be an engineering officer on one of the galaxy’s most powerful, state of the art starships.

He has the grades, he has the aptitude – and his application for the naval academy is in. All he has to do is wait for the call up.

Then he witnesses a double murder.

Barely escaping with his life, can he evade the unlimited resources of a galactic syndicate hunting for him and uncover a conspiracy that involves the very institution he’s determined to join?

The Aspirant: a tale of friendships, betrayals, unspeakable crimes – and greed.

Biography: Writing sci-fi wouldn't normally be considered natural progression for an ex Royal Engineer and retired publican, but it keeps me out of my local pub for a few hours a day. I have been an avid sci-fi reader for many decades, and cut my teeth reading Asimov, E. E. Doc Smith, Alan Dean Foster and such like. In more recent times Andy Weir's The Martian and absolutely everything penned by the fantastic Peter F Hamilton and Gareth L Powell inspired me to think about writing some stories of my own. There never was any doubt in my mind that if I ever did write anything it would be sci-fi, and then in late 2016, my other half encouraged me to start jotting down some ideas and she'd let me know if it had legs. What happened next was that over the next eight months, I wrote the first in 'The Fold Series' from beginning to end. No planning, no notes. It just evolved in chapter order. It needed a bit of editing of course, but the manuscript was there, and the responses from the first beta readers was fantastic. I had apparently become a "pantser" style of writer, and after recently meeting Lee Child, who is a self-confessed pantser, I've concluded I'm in good company and that pantsing isn't necessarily a bad thing. The first two novels in the Fold series were written during 2017 and 2018 while we were still living in North Brisbane, Australia. In late August of 2018 we returned to the UK, where the next two evolved during 2019 and 2020 and as I update this in a pretty village in Somerset, the fifth in series is developing and the second in the Bache Loftt spin-off series has just been written.
